At the beginning of 2020, Proton VPN announced that their apps are now open-source and audited. It was an anticipated step, given the fact that the company is well-known for its dedication to providing a safe and secure browsing experience.
Proton VPN has open-sourced its apps(Opens in a new window), meaning any researcher can verify there are no potential vulnerabilities. It also manages a bug bounty, paying researchers for the bug vulnerabilities they submit, and had its apps audited by SEC Consult. In April 2022, the company released the results of an audit of its security policies by Securitum(Opens in a new window) that found Proton VPN fulfilled its promises of privacy for customers. Audits are imperfect, but still useful for establishing trust.
Elsewhere, the DNS-based NetShield web filter blocks malware, ads and trackers. There are now native apps for Windows, Android, Mac and iOS to enable using ProtonVPN on almost anything. Oh, and they're open source and audited, too.
