WHY: The USO has partnered with the NFL for 52 years during its more than 77-year history to support the military and its mission to connect service members to family, home and country throughout their service to the nation. The partnership began in 1966, when the USO teamed with the NFL and sent the first group of sports players ever to visit troops. What began in Vietnam and other parts of the Far East has since grown to more than 250 NFL players, coaches and executives, including TERRY BRADSHAW, BILL COWHER, FRANCO HARRIS, LARRY FITZGERALD, LYNN SWANN and J.J. WATT, visiting troops on USO tours in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Iraq, Japan, South Korea, Kuwait and Somalia. In 2008 Commissioner ROGER GOODELL became the first sports commissioner to visit troops overseas as part of a USO tour when he visited Iraq and Afghanistan.
\"The USO and NFL have teamed up for more than 50 years as a Force Behind the ForcesSM to connect service members and their families to the things they hold dear. This tour is one of many ways we work together to salute America's men and women in uniform by bringing them a taste of home and the thanks of a grateful nation for all they do to protect and defend our freedoms.\"
\"The NFL is proud to work with the USO on another goodwill tour, providing players, coaches and executives the chance to show their appreciation for service members and have the unique experience of engaging with our nation's heroes in person. The League's connection to the military is longstanding, due in large part to a strong partnership with the USO. The NFL remains committed to giving back to the brave individuals who fight for our safety every day and honoring them for their service and sacrifice.\"
About the USO: The USO strengthens America's military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. At hundreds of locations worldwide, we are united in our commitment to connect our service members and their families through countless acts of caring, comfort, and support. The USO is a private, nonprofit organization, not a government agency. Our programs, services and entertainment tours are made possible by the American people, support of our corporate partners, and the dedication of our volunteers and staff.
Unfortunately, this means that when you start getting deeper into the Tour, the computer will likely frustrate you with its sheer unwavering accuracy. In fact, that's really the greatest flaw of NFL Tour: though the action may be intense and the big hits satisfying, playing against the computer will likely be a trying task for a non-football gamer. True to form, the error rate of the computer becomes next to nonexistent through the course of the tour and even I, with countless seasons of Madden and NCAA under my belt, found myself getting mercilessly whooped by the end of the Tour. Multiplayer alleviates this, but the single player experience remains frustrating for all the wrong reasons.

When the USO joined forces with the NFL in 1966 for a series of goodwill tours to visit U.S. military members stationed in Vietnam, these four Pro Football Hall of Famers led the way. They were the first in a series of players, coaches and officials who have continued to visit service men and women to this day.

Book tours are debilitating. My body clock is so screwed up that, on consecutive nights, I woke up in the middle of the night and had no idea where I was. My right thumb has swelled to 140 percent the size of my left thumb. My back is crumbling like blue cheese. My immune system might turn me into Patient X of Swine Flu 2.0 before everything's said and done. Even my BlackBerry mouse no longer can move to the right.
The good news: All of these things are fixable. (Well, except for my right thumb. Can't feel anything. Might have to chop if off Ronnie Lott-style.) What can't be fixed is my formerly hot NFL picks season. Sayonara, My Best Record Ever. It's gone. Out the window. And all because my book tour prevented me from properly following football. Or, because I suck at picking games and was destined to go cold. It's one or the other.
Because I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy, I have decided to blame the tour for my picking woes. In 11 days, I went from Washington to Philly to Bristol to Manhattan to Boston to Los Angeles to Chicago to Phoenix to San Francisco to San Diego. I would do it again. See, the worst thing about being a writer is that you can't see the people who are reading you. They are just nameless, faceless people with e-mail addresses. Book signings put a face on these people. That's why I like them. I also happen to have an exceedingly nice and appreciative group of readers. Which makes it so much fun to go visit them.
Of course, when you bang out 11 signings in 11 days, memories invariably jumble together and stop belonging to a sequence. They become … jumbled. Like one of those smoothies that have 11 different fruits in them. I can't even tell the fruits apart anymore. So here are the jumbled memories of my book tour. I could not present them any other way. It's all one big unrecognizable smoothie.
