For example, German has a strong connection to a masculine subject-first language that has been dominant since the Middle Ages. Hence, when discussing people's names and other personal details, German speakers commonly introduce their personal information using terms like 'dieser' or 'welcher'. When these subjects were first introduced to the Irish language, one of our language officers, Aoife Doherty, tried to introduce them for the LEP's inaugural translation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. However, the German word 'dieser' had been introduced into Irish by an Irish-speaking friend of Aoife, and the Irish word 'éirí', which means 'this' in Irish Gaelic, is much more commonly used in Irish today.
One of the most complex language issues that we are aware of is the widespread use of the word'míle' in Irish for one thousand. In many areas, there is a strong connection between the word'míle' and the number 'one thousand', and when people are asked how many thousand they are, they often use'míle' as a response. The original meaning of'míle' in Irish is 'a leap', so when the word is used for one thousand it can be very confusing. As with many Irish words, the word'míle' has a long history, and one of our Language Officers, Graham de Búrca, was first introduced to the word by his father when he was learning Irish.
Other languages have a more complex gender context than Irish. For example, one of our translators, Nóra Hogan, has a strong affinity with Latin and Greek, and Latin and Greek are both commonly studied languages in Ireland. As Nóra explains: 'I sometimes feel I could switch languages without any trouble at all. I find it much easier to translate between languages I know rather than languages I don't. I notice that when I am translating from Irish into English, I am less likely to use inclusive language. However, if I'm translating from English into Irish, I am more likely to use inclusive language, and I find it easier to translate a male into a female. It's a bit of a double standard, but I think it's because of my personal experience of not using inclusive language in the first place.'
All of our language teams use gender-neutral language, both in written communication and in the way that we operate in the community. We are working very hard on the second trilogy of Harry Potter, and this will help us develop the language even further. We feel this is important. That will take time.
